Wedge Sandals Healthier for Feet than Flip-Flops: MD Podiatrist
It’s sandal season, but before you reach for your usual flats or flip-flops, know this: Wedge sandals are actually healthier for your feet. Unlike flat sandals, wedges offer more evenly distributed pressure throughout the foot, says Daniel Michaels, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist at UTMB Health Internal Medicine in Houston. They also provide better arch support, which will help you avoid knee, hip, and back problems.
Straps across the forefoot, mid-foot, and/or ankle provide more support for your feet, Dr. Michaels notes. If the straps are adjustable, that’s even better. “This allows you to create a snugger, supportive fit on your foot, if necessary,” Dr. Michaels explains. “Look for natural materials like leather, suede, or cork, as opposed to synthetic options,” Dr. Michaels says. The reason: Soft, natural fabrics allow the shoe’s toe box to stretch and form more comfortably over your feet.
