“Warts are benign (non-cancerous) growths in the skin that are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV),” Michaels said. “As a result, they are contagious and can be spread from person to person. When it comes to ditching shoes and going barefoot, the podiatrist says public spaces carry some risk including the transmission of the virus that causes plantar warts.
