MD Podiatrist Discusses Running Shoes for Shin Splints
“For people prone to shin splints, the goal is to reduce repetitive impact stress on the tibia and surrounding muscles,” says Dan Michaels, DPM. He explained that people with high arches are more likely to suffer from shin splints. “Highly rigid feet and high arches tend to absorb less shock naturally, so the shoe has to help compensate for that. I recommend shoes with a combination of shock absorption, stable cushioning, good midfoot support, and a smooth heel-to-toe transition,” said Dr. Michaels.
Dr. Michaels recommends what to look for in a shoe if you have shin splints:
- Adequate cushioning to reduce repetitive impact stress
- Stable midsole for better control during walking and running
- Good arch support, especially for people with high arches
- Smooth heel-to-toe transition to reduce shin strain
- Proper fit to encourage natural foot motion and prevent altered biomechanics
