MD Podiatrist Provides 4 Steps to Prevent Diabetic Amputations
Diabetic foot is progressive, meaning it gets worse over time, and is a leading cause of foot amputations. However, most amputations can be avoided with early intervention. “People tend to wait too long,” says Dan Michaels, DPM. If wounds occur in the feet, they’re slow to heal because adequate blood flow is needed for tissue to heal, says Dr. Michaels. These wounds can become infected, leading to serious complications like diabetic ulcers, a leading cause for amputations.
Foot care doesn’t have to be complicated, but does require daily attention, says Michaels. “1) Look. 2) React. 3) Prevent, and 4) Control your blood sugars,” says Michaels. “Most issues, including amputations, are preventable by following those four steps.”
