MD Podiatrist Explains Warning Signs of Hidden Health Issues

Our bodies are complex systems, and sometimes crucial health problems can manifest in seemingly unrelated ways.

At the  Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Institute, we’re often tasked with detecting these hidden issues. Today, Dr. Dan Michaels, DPM, highlights two podiatric red flags you shouldn’t ignore: reduced blood flow and pitting edema.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and the Risk of Critical Limb-Threatening Ischemia (CLTI)

Dr. Michaels warns that reduced blood flow, medically known as Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), is a surprisingly common condition that often goes undiagnosed until it becomes severe.

  • “PAD develops when arteries supplying blood to the legs become narrowed due to plaque buildup,” explains Dr. Michaels. “This starves tissues of oxygen and nutrients, hindering healing and potentially leading to critical limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI).”
  • CLTI is a severe condition where wounds on the legs or feet struggle to heal, significantly increasing the risk of infection and even amputation.

Early detection is critical to managing PAD and preventing CLTI

Unfortunately, symptoms like leg pain, cramping, and numbness can be subtle, leading to delayed diagnosis.

  • Dr. Michaels emphasizes regular podiatric checkups to identify PAD early on.
  • Treatment options include lifestyle modifications, medication, and minimally invasive procedures to improve blood flow.

Pitting Edema: A Warning Sign for Heart or Kidney Issues

Dr. Michaels also highlights another podiatric red flag: pitting edema.

  • This occurs when fluid builds up in the legs, causing them to swell. A simple test can help you identify it: press your finger firmly against your ankle for a few seconds. If an indentation remains after you remove your finger, it could be a sign of pitting edema.
  • “Pitting edema is a common symptom of heart failure and kidney disease,” explains Dr. Michaels. “These are serious conditions that require prompt medical attention.” If you experience pitting edema, Dr. Michaels urges you to see your doctor for a comprehensive evaluation.
