Understanding Gout: Causes, Symptoms, and Management
Gout, a common form of inflammatory arthritis, was once referred to as “the disease of kings.” These days, however, it affects people of all kinds, and Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Institute has plenty of experience in managing it.
How Does Gout Happen?
Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. Uric acid is a natural waste product created when the body breaks down purines, which are found in certain foods and produced naturally by the body.
- Typically, uric acid dissolves intheblood, passes through the kidneys, and leaves as urine.
- However, if the body produces too much uric acid or excretes too little, it can accumulate and form sharp crystals in the joints, causing gout attacks.
Symptoms include sudden, intense pain, swelling, and tenderness in joints.
- The most frequently affected area is the big toe, but it can also occur in other parts of the foot and ankle.
Managing Gout At-Home
At-home strategies can help manage the condition and reduce the frequency of flare-ups, including:
- Dietary Modifications: Certain foods and drinks are known to increase uric acid levels. So:
- Reduce intake of purine-rich foods such as red meat, organ meats, seafood, andcertain vegetables like asparagus or spinach.
- Limit sugary drinks and alcohol, especially beer, as they can contribute to elevated uric acid levels.
- Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day to help flush out uric acid.
- Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight can help reduce the risk of gout attacks. Losing even a small amount of weight can lower uric acid levels and decrease stress on affected joints.
- Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Regular exercise and stress management techniques can help improve overall health and reduce the frequency of gout flare-ups.
- Foot Care: During a gout attack, rest the affected foot and apply ice packs to reduce inflammation. Avoid tight shoes or socks that can put pressure on the joint, and if you’re struggling to find the right fit, ask us for in-office shoe options!
