Do’s and Don’ts of Shoe Shopping: A Podiatrist’s Guide
Choosing the right shoes can make a world of difference in your comfort and overall foot health. Unfortunately, picking the wrong pair will lead you closer to podiatric problems with every step.
Below, you’ll find some essential do’s and don’ts to keep in mind, courtesy of Dr. Daniel Michaels and the team at Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Institute.
DO
1.) Consider What They’re For:
Different activities require different types of shoes. For example, running shoes are designed for impact absorption, while hiking boots offer stability and support.
Dr. Michaels Says:
- “Consider activities, duration, and who the shoes are for. For example, Crocs are acceptable for quick trips to the beach or the pool, but don’t provide enough support in the arch or heel stability for kids.”
2.) Check Out Construction and Design:
Well-made shoes with quality materials will last longer and provide better support.
Dr. Michaels Says:
- “Crocs are again a useful example. With Crocs, the combination of the plastic construction and lack of heel support may require a child to grip the inside of the shoe with his toes as he walks, resulting in blisters. Crocs are also waterproof but not moisture-wicking, so if the feet sweat, that causes friction blisters.”
DON’T
1.) Ignore Foot Pain:
If you experience persistent foot pain, don’t ignore it. See a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Michaels Says:
- “Once you develop pain…you definitely should have that pain examined. Also, have your foot shape and type examined so we can figure out what improvements might be made. Some foot issues can be fixed with good shoes alone. Other things that can be helpful to reduce pain are physical therapy, cortisone injections, orthopedic strappings, shockwave therapy, and, in some cases, surgery.”
2.) Ignore the Power of Insoles:
If you have specific foot problems, custom orthotics or quality insoles can significantly improve your comfort and foot health.
Dr. Michaels Says:
- “Having a special molded insert for your foot can turn a bad pair of shoes into good ones. There are also exercises, stretches, pads, and products where you can stick your toes in and maybe straighten them out a little bit.”
